November 25, 1924 - March 09, 2026

Howard Thomas Young

Howard Thomas Young, age 101, passed away on March 9 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Savannah. Born on 11/24/1925 in Lake Charles, LA, Howard was the youngest of 4 boys. He was a proud WWII Navy veteran & prolific volunteer around Savannah since his retirement in 1983.

After graduating high school at age 17, in the throes of WWII involvement, Howard enlisted in the Navy; last serving in the South Pacific commanded by 5-star Admiral Chester Nemitz. Following his military service, he moved to Ohio and completed his education through night school at University of Toledo with a degree in accounting & minor in economics. For 35 years, he was employed by Owens-Illinois, Inc. managing their glass containers & pricing division.

Upon retirement at age 58, he relocated to Savannah. Ever since, Howard has worked tirelessly through the next 4 decades in volunteer service to multitudes of organizations. He amassed volumes of certificates of appreciation & awards along the way, logging hundreds of hours of volunteer time and effort.

Howard was thrilled to be flown to the nation’s capital on one of the Veterans’ Honor Flights & delighted by numerous celebrations arranged for his 100th birthday. He’ll be well remembered & missed - for his industrious nature, generosity - and handing out mini tootsie rolls everywhere he went.

Organizations benefiting from his generosity include VA Hospital, Isle of Hope United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 184, Republican Council of Savannah, Coastal Alzheimer’s Assoc., AmeriCorps Seniors, Savannah Senior Center, Coastal GA Cares, Generation One, Retired & Seniors Volunteer Program.

Howard was a true southern gentleman! He showed so much kindness, concern, and love to both my daughters, myself and our family. He always had a smile and a tootsie roll to greet us with, along with listening ears to see how we were doing. I will carry joyful memories of Howard in my heart, memories that always bring a smile to my face. GOD bless you, Howard, and may our gracious Lord and Savior Jesus, hold your friends and family close in the days ahead, as they celebrate a life well lived.
